Richard graduated from NUS in 1981 and worked with William Lim Associates and Kerry Hill Architects before venturing to Austria and Italy in 1985 where he spent six years working as an architect, the last two years with Aldo Rossi before returning to Singapore in 1991 to set up RichardHO Architects.

In the past twenty years, Richard Ho has received numerous awards for his work on conservation projects – he was the first Singaporean architect to receive the ARCASIA (Architects Regional Council of Asia) Gold Medal, 3 SIA (Singapore Institute of Architects) Design Awards and four URA Architectural Heritage Awards.

Richard’s practice believes in using architecture as an expression of the continuity of the history of civilization and the memory of our cities. His practice strives to achieve an architecture that resonates with man’s unending endeavor to be in harmony with his soul and the world he lives in.

Speaker and Firm Profile

Vivien is a Certified Green Mark Manager with some 28 years’ experience as a Registered Architect in the design and implementation of a wide range of institutional, residential, industrial and mixed developments.
As Director in RSP Architects Planners and Engineers (Pte) Ltd and also as its Environment & QA Director leading the firm’s Environmental Sustainability Unit, she is always inspired by environmentally-responsible design solutions and innovative strategies in green building technologies today. Vivien serves in several sustainability workgroups and chairs the Interior Systems Taskforce in SGBC’s Product Certification Scheme. She also serves in the Board of Examiners for BCA’s Specialist Diploma in Construction Management Programme and currently is also working hard on RSP’s BIM development for project delivery.
For her commitment to sustainable building design over the years, she was recognized with the inaugural BCA-SGBC Green Architect Award 2011.

Synopsis on “Design For Sustainability”
Vivien believes that everyone possesses the potential to create value for our sustainable future. She will share her experiences in building up green knowledge in a private practice and the approach that has delivered some recent green buildings in Singapore.

Alan Tay received a Master of Architecture degree in 2000 from the National University of Singapore. He is one of the founding partner of Formwerkz Architects, a practice known for its innovation and human-centric approach, rooted in the belief that architecture has the power to espouse more active engagement from man with his environment.

Formwerkz’s numerous projects have received critical acclaim both locally and internationally. Their works are featured in numerous regional and international publications. In 2010, the 3 design partners were selected by AUDE’s “20Under45: The Next Generation” exhibition, aim to promote a greater awareness and appreciation of design excellence. The Apartment House was listed in Monocle’s Singapore Survey 2009 as one of the “Best of the Modern”, alongside the likes of Paul Rudolph’s Colonnade and IM Pei’s OCBC Bank.

SIA Senior Architect – Student Mentorship Programme

The Singapore Institute of Architects is pleased to invite student members to participate in this Mentorship Programme. Under the programme,

 
1. SIA student-members will be assigned to respective Senior Architect Mentors for technical guidance in their architectural education for a period of one year, with option to extend till end of course of study.

 
2. Student-members shall be privileged to seek technical-counsel on their course work with their Mentor at a mutually-convenient schedule.

 
3. Mentors will provide the opportunity for student-members to gain valuable insight into the practical aspect of architectural design and practice. This may be via site visits or even attendance at office project briefings, if appropriate.

 
4. Mentors will acquaint student-members with the design and building process, construction methods as well as problems and solutions of architectural practice and design, with an overview for them to understand the entire design and implementation process.

 
SIA believes that it is the moral duty of the present generation of architects to nurture the next in order that the practices evolve in an environment of excellence. This will also enable student members to establish a professional relationship with firms at an early stage, and bridge employment expectation gaps between student and firm, if and when students decide to work with the same firm upon graduation.

 
The Institute believes that this programme can contribute significantly to uplifting the overall state of architectural practice in Singapore.
